1946 Canadian Brand & Millen Astra DR-102U Table Radio

Rare Canadian AM Table Radio, made by Brand & Millen under the Astra Label in 1946 from three-tone Wood, Serviced and Perfectly Working

In a Nutshell
Rare Canadian Post-War Beauty with Bright Dial

Introduction:
The virtual radio museum (ref.1) notes Astra and Brand & Millen as two different companies. It seems, however that Astra was just a brand name of the latter. Next to nothing is known about the manufacturer (pict.23) who made only a few radios right after the war, mostly battery sets. Brand & Millen seem to have distributed also Crosley and Garod radios in Canada. The model we have here, exhibits several different designs of its front face (pict.s 21,22), the one for sale with its wooden grille being the most elaborate. The nicest feature is a bright 110 Volt dial light, that makes the radio almost a bedside lamp (pict.s 11, 13, 17). Otherwise it is a great player, including the police band!

About my radio:

The cabinet has only a few tiny marks to its finish, not warranting refinishing, a rarity when compared to pict.s 21 and 22. The two bakelite knobs are original to this radio and have a very unique shape (pict.15). The radio comes with its original back plane with integrated loop antenna (pict.s 9, 10). It came to me without tubes. Pict.19 shows 5 NOS tubes right out of their boxes, that have been installed. The radio's chassis is in mint condition and was thoroughly cleaned, electronically serviced and recapped. It works with excellent sensitivity, selectivity and volume.
