1948 Crosley 9-105 Beehive SW Radio in Swirled Bakelite

Amazing Beehive Styled Bakelite Radio Crosley 9-105 from 1948 - Shortwave Version, Mint, Serviced and Working

In a Nutshell
Artistry in Bakelite and Gold - a Streamline Design with Aquatic Touches

Introduction:
This radio came out in 1948 in 4 different versions (ref.1):

9-103  AM-only bakelite               July  1948
9-104W AM-only white painted bakelite July  1948
9-105  AM + SW bakelite               Sept. 1948
9-106W AM + SW white painted bakelite Sept. 1948

There were also 1949 models with one tube less.
The radio screams Streamline with its round corners and edges, but still breathes Art Deco air with its twofold water theme - the wavy perforated gold painted metal grille in front and the waterfall emanating from its integrated handle in the back. Here we have the early version with 6 tubes, and the additional short-wave band, in natural swirled bakelite. And what bakelite - have a look at the first few pictures - you may use it as a shaving mirror!

About my radio:
The radio is in mint condition
. The cabinet has no cracks, hairlines, chips, scratches or heat burns, and exhibits a perfect original bakelite surface. The chassis is in perfect condition too, the speaker having minor repairs using flexible glue. The radio has its original loop antenna, the power cord has been replaced. The celluloid dial window is in perfect condition too, with no paint loss and no scratches. The three knobs are not original, but in fact look better than the original ones, and may have been replaced by the former owner by purpose. Have a look at picture 12, that shows the perfect match of the swirled bakelite of the knobs with the cabinet. The radio plays nicely (see movie by clicking on thumbnail 24), with extremely good sensitivity and selectivity, due to the sixth (RF) tube added in early models. For the techies:
No techies this time, it just works - watch the movie.
